Le dommage d'irradiation peut atteindre 80 dpa dans les zones les plus irradiées après 40 ans de fonctionnement. Selon la température d'irradiation, les obstacles microstructuraux intragranulaires suivants sont observés : boucles de dislocations interstitielles, fautées, sessiles [...] formation de cavités (et/ou de bulles de gaz) éventuellement durcissantes [...] ségrégation et éventuellement précipitation induite par l'irradiation (notamment de type Ni3Si); déstabilisation éventuelle de la matrice austénitique (formation de ferrite, martensite...).
